Maungaraki/Korokoro Dam Walk

From Oakleigh Street, Maungaraki to the dam.
Walk | 1 hour return.
Going this way requires a bit of an up hill walk on the return trip but there are toilets available at the car park.

From Cornish Street, Petone to the dam.
Walk | 3 hours return.
Cornish Street, Petone, just off SH2 is another good entrance spot and has the flattest walking through the entire Korokoro Gorge but there aren’t any toilet facilities at this entrance.

From Oakleigh Street to Cornish Street (mostly downhill). Walk | 2+ hours.
You need to have one car parked at either end for this option.

Today is the day…. the sun is out, the birds are chirping and this is the day I start my walking challenge. Jane, Deborah, Izzy and Elliott have joined me on this downhill bushwalk from Oakleigh Street in Maungaraki to Cornish Street in Petone.

I wanted the first bush walk to be enjoyable and this is a beautiful walk through mature and regenerating bush down to the Korokoro Dam. We had great conversation the whole way, and who knew Jane was so knowledgable about native flora and fauna – she pointed out so many interesting facts and sights to us along the way  🙂

The dam was our rest stop. We sat in the sun, marveled at the scenery and took some photos. This dam was the first gravity fed concrete dam in New Zealand, built to supply water for the Petone Borough in 1903.

The second part of this walk was on an evenly graded track that follows the old steel pipeline used to transport the water ending at the Cornish Street entrance. The scenery is very different but beautiful just the same.

It took us just over 2 hours and we were all smiling at the end … yay, this was a really good start!
